Capcom's 1994 title Dungeons & Dragons: Tower of Doom is a side scrolling beat 'em up. Unlike many genre contemporaries, Tower of Doom introduces role playing elements like branching story pathways, item inventory, and character leveling. The combat itself is also quite deep, with available techniques that include blocking, crouching, and evading.
