Sunset Riders

Konami's 1990 title Sunset Riders is a side-scrolling run-and-gun themed after American westerns. Players are tasked with defeating a boss identified with a "WANTED" sign at the onset of each level, plowing through gangs of bandits by leaping over second floor railings and shooting in 8 directions. The game is presented with a comical over-the-top sensibility, keeping things interesting up until the very end.

In this episode of Tubby Talk, Terry, Steve, and Chris dash into the world of Sonic the Hedgehog. This character hit some amazing high points in the 90s, but has had what we'd charitably call an inconsistent run in the two decades since. Of course, we can't talk about Sonic in the modern era with touching upon his powerful influence on the world of memes.

Games discussed include: Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic 3, Sonic and Knuckles, Sonic 3D Blast, Sonic CD, Sonic Adventure, Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic 4, Sonic Mania.

In this episode of Tubby Talk, Terry, Steve, and Chris talk about video game marketing and how terrifyingly effective can be when done well. They quickly discover how these ad campaigns insidiously wrapped themselves around our brain stems from a very young age and are even successfully crossing generational lines.

Topics discussed include: The Nintendo Cereal System, McDonald's Happy Meals, The Sega Scream, David Fincher-esque insanity in 90s TV ads, Godzilla 2000 and Final Fantasy VII, Mickey Mouse-ification of franchises, Game Boy rap songs, Conan O'Brien's Clueless Gamer, Burger King advergames, and the entire monolith of Pokemon domination.

This week marks the 100th unique game we've played on WALL-O-VISION, our custom projected arcade system. We've played a ton of classics and a nice collection of obscure curiosities, and we wouldn't have it any other way.

To mark the occasion, we're now playing a tragically unheralded gem. Sega's 1998 title Spikeout: Digital Battle Online is a 3D beat-'em-up game. Deceptively deep fighting mechanics allow players to use button combinations and charges to perform a wide variety of attacks, each with specific crowd-control applications.

This one holds a special place in our hearts, and this just might be the only place in the tri-state area you can play it right now.

We've been wanting to make a special sundae for Cinco de Mayo for years, but this time we finally got it done!

Our Fried Ice Cream is a hearty scoop of vanilla tossed in pan-fried cinnamon and butter crunch, topped with fudge, caramel, and whipped cream. Enjoy it this weekend only, because we won't be able to keep ourselves from eating it any longer than that.

Oh hey! Lavender Honey ice cream is back, too. I hear people like that one.

In this episode of Tubby Talk, Terry, Steve, and Chris take a deep dive into their favorite gaming music and the real-world bands it came to inspire. There's a little bit of group therapy during a discussion on emotional end credit themes, followed by an exploration of the chiptune and video game cover scene. The episode is capped off with a little game of "guess that tune I'm humming poorly".

Bands discussed include: Tanguy Ukulele Orchestra, Smooth McGroove, The Megas, The Minibosses, Arm Cannon, Mega Ran, XOC, and Kirby's Dream Band.
